Meg barrels onto USA rodeo scene

MEG Stewart has dreamed of travelling to the US for years and after being selected as part of the Australian High School Rodeo Team, her dream is about to come true.

The Warwick State High School Year 12 student will board a plane on Sunday for Minneapolis, where she will meet the horse she will be competing with.

"We go to the ranch for the first week, where we get to practise with our horse," she said.

"Mine is named 'Lady' and hopefully I'll get along with her.

"She is a high-performance horse and is supposed to be pretty fast."

Stewart will then travel to Rock Springs in Wyoming to compete in the 64th Annual National High School Finals Rodeo.

The 17-year-old has been selected to compete in the barrel racing and pole bending events.

Stewart said she had been riding horses for as long as she could remember.

"My uncle used to have a Shetland pony named Tim Tam and I would ride it all the time," she said.

"I have done pony club and campdrafting and as I got older I really enjoyed barrel racing.

"I only took up rodeo two years ago when I joined the school team.

"I saved up and bought my own horse and I really got into it.

"I love the adrenaline rush of it all; it is just so much fun."

However Stewart's dream of travelling to the US, the home of rodeo, came close to not coming true.

In order to be selected Stewart had to place in the top four at the Australian Student Rodeo competition.

Stewart placed fifth.

However, one of the top four pulled out and now she is on her way.

"It has kind of all worked out," she said.

"I really wanted to make the team and have been dreaming of going to America only I didn't think it would happen this quickly."
