Meet the RV Investigator

FISHERMEN and boaties who spotted a strange vessel off Coffs Harbour this week can be reassured it was not a super trawler, as initially feared.

It was the RV Investigator, a new 94 metre CSIRO research vessel, commissioned in January.

CSIRO spokesman Huw Morgan said the RV Investigator travelled from Brisbane to Sydney this week studying East Coast eddies.

He said the vessel also undertook some trawling with very small nets looking for juvenile fish, plankton and other marine life that lives in eddies.

Interested people can follow the RV Investigator's future journeys at marinetraffic.com and find see further information on the CSIRO website, or simply Google RV Investigator.

The vessel has now reached Sydney.
