Meet the Dogfather: finding loving homes for pooches

THE fact his service is needed at all is heartbreaking.

But together with Northern Rivers councils and other organisations, Paul Horwath has helped to rehome more than 100 dogs this year.

Mr Horwath said he'd been rescuing dogs since he was young.

"I was the kid that would always bring dogs home," he said.

He's made this a more formalised process of late, with his Facebook page The Dogfather Rescue.

"I've been doing dog rescues since I left home at 20, and I'm now 49," he said.

After being involved with the RSPCA in Queensland, he moved to NSW about ten years ago and began fostering animals.

More recently, he has begun advertising for those already working to rehome animals.

"What I'm trying to do is join services together," he said.

Mr Horwath lives in Pottsville but has linked up with Lismore City Council, Richmond Valley Council and Tweed Shire Council pounds along with rehoming services like Friends of the Pound, Redgate Farm Animal Sanctuary and Companion Animals Welfare Inc.

While the reason his page exists at all is saddening, Mr Horwath said he focuses on the positives of finding animals a caring home.

"I just look at what I can do to help them," he said.

He said he Dogfather Rescue page had helped to rehome 107 dogs so far this year.

This included five just last week.

Mr Horwath said the response from the community had been heartwarming and he hoped to see the page grow to also link in with the Gold Coast and Coffs Harbour areas.

But he encouraged those looking for a new pooch to first consider adoption.

"Rescued animals are a better choice," he said.
