Meet the candidates

VOTERS in Bellingen Shire can meet the candidate for the Council elections at a breakfast next Wednesday.

Urunga-Mylestom Chamber Of Commerce has organised the gathering at C.ex Urunga (Golf Club) with the doors opening at 7am for commencement 30 minutes later.

A total of 25 candidates are standing for seven positions on council at the September 8 elections.

Incumbent mayor Mark Troy will be challenged by Wayne Wadsworth for the top position with seven group tickets and one individual nominee, chasing the remaining six berths.

Every candidate has been invited to give a short speech outlining themselves and their platform and then will be asked to respond to a number of pre-determined questions set by the chamber and based on input from community and chamber members.

Only the number one in each group will be speaking and therefore answering questions.

Bookings should be made by Monday with publicity officer Greg McPhee by phoning 0408 556 341 or emailing gregmcphee53@gmail.com

When voters go to the polling booths, one notable name will be missing.

Gordon Braithwaite has decided not to stand, ending the longest service by a councillor in Bellingen's history.

First elected in 1971, Gordon spent just over 32 years in the job including almost 15 years as either mayor or shire president.

Other current councillors who have decided not to run are Kerry Child, Ian Coe, Bruce Cronin and Shaun Tuohy.
