Measles alert for north Brisbane residents

NORTH Brisbane residents are urged to familiarise themselves with the symptoms of measles, after a woman was diagnosed with the highly contagious condition.

North Metro Public Health Service said the Camp Mountain woman visited a number of locations while unknowingly infected, including:

- Samford IGA, Samford Caltex and Samford Patisserie & Café on December 15 and 16

- Spokes Café at Samford on December 17

- Aspley Medical Centre, Sullivan and Nicolaides and Pharmasave on December 21

- The Prince Charles Hospital emergency department on December 22 and 23 between 10.30pm and 1am.

Public Health Physician Dr Mekala Srirajalingam said measles was one of the most infectious communicable diseases.

Dr Srirajalingam said anyone who develops measles-like symptoms within the next week or two should stay home and contact their GP for advice.

"Symptoms usually start around 10 days after contact, but can occur between 7 and 21 days after contact with an infectious person," Dr Srirajalingam said.

Measles symptoms include fever, lethargy, runny nose, moist cough and sore and red eyes.

Later, a blotchy, red rash develops.
