McLaughlin leads DJR Team Penske's Townsville campaign

TOWNSVILLE continued to be a place of mixed emotions for DJR Team Penske on day two after red-hot Scott McLaughlin nailed qualifying yet again but teammate Fabian Coulthard was left out of the picture for a second day.

McLaughlin sizzled in qualifying and posted the fastest time for the Top Ten shootout this afternoon, lowering his own Supercars track record set on Saturday with a 1:12.03.

As he did a day before, the pole sitter and winner of race one sat out the last five minutes of qualifying with confidence he wouldn't be caught.

Chaz Mostert was over two-tenths of a second behind in second and Mark Winterbottom was third. Four Prodrive drivers made the top ten, including Jason Bright in his 250th round, but Coulthard led a contingent of big names who'll start further back in the 70-lap race at 4pm.

After a disastrous opening day where he finished 11th and gave up his drivers championship lead, Coulthard could only manage the 12th fastest time.

Craig Lowndes' poor weekend continued, too, with 21st spot on the grid.
