McLaren's 12C a technological tour de force

FOR this week's blog I'm looking at this stealthy black-on-black 2013 McLaren 12C spotted roaming the streets of Beverly Hills.

The 12C, formally known as the MP4-12C, was the first production car made by McLaren after their record-breaking F1 hypercar of 1992. It definitely had large shoes to fill.

The McLaren F1 held the record as the world's fastest production car for over 12 years, and there were only 106 ever produced.

McLaren had a different idea for the 12C though, they wanted to build a more affordable supercar that could challenge the cars from some of the better-known automakers such as Lamborghini and Ferrari.

Sitting behind the rear seats is a 3.8-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine which is capable of producing  460kW @ 7500rpm and 601Nm of torque@3000rpm.

The engine is extremely lightweight and compact, helping the 12C's fuel economy. McLaren quotes an un-supercar-esque combined figure of 11.7-litres/100km.

Connected to the engine is a 7-speed, dual-clutch automated manual transmission which features shifting paddles behind the steering wheel for manual control. All of the power is then sent to the rear wheels. Thanks to the special carbon fibre MonoCell body structure specific to this car, the 12C has a kerb weight of just 1434kg.

This allows the McLaren 12C to launch from 0-100kmh in just 3.1 seconds, and it will keep accelerating until it reaches its top speed of 329kmh.

The main rival for this beautiful machine is the Ferrari 458 Italia. McLaren claim that on paper that the 12C is better than the Ferrari in every single mechanical way. Power, torque, top speed, acceleration, weight...everything.

It makes you think, unless you were a true Ferrari enthusiast or you didn't like the look or sound of the 12C, why would you spend the extra money on a 458?

You can currently purchase a 2013 McLaren 12C in Australia for around $380,000 before on-road costs.

FAST TIMES: McLaren 12C hits 100kmh in 3.1 seconds and can reach 329kmh - or over 200mph.
