Ipswich mayor responds to Paul Gallen's "two-heads" jibe

COLOURFUL Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale has responded to the "two-heads" jibe made by NSW Origin skipper Paul Gallen, saying he will find out soon enough how smart Queenslanders are.

After Gallen (pictured) was rebuked for his "disrespectful two-headed" comment by "King" Wally Lewis, Pisasale said people from Ipswich were tough enough to take a joke, but warned Gallen could eat his words at Suncorp Stadium in front of 50,000 fans - who all have one head.

"When I saw that, I thought it was the best compliment he could have paid us," Pisasale told APN.

"Poor old Ipswich has been coping that insult for years. I'm glad he (Gallen) has acknowledged we're twice as brainy and twice as good at football than his Blues."

Lewis branded Gallen's comments as disrespectful, and another example of why NSW don't "get Origin".

Gallen said as one of the greats of the game, Lewis was entitled to his opinion.

However he stood his ground in Brisbane yesterday, accusing Lewis of getting in on the Origin act by trying to put NSW off its game.

"This is part of Origin, this is part of the build up they're trying to get into our heads, them trying to make us think about that and not about the game - that's what Origin is about," Gallen said.

"A week in Origin can zap your energy before you even get to the game.

"We can't buy into it. It's great for the fans, it's great for you guys because you have to have something to write about, but the only thing that matters is what happens on Wednesday night.

"My comments last week have been pulled in every which direction to suit Queensland.

"They weren't aimed at Queensland players, everyone knows that.

"They were a light-hearted jibe at the situation explaining to people how hostile it is when we get up here and how tough it is when we get up here."

Pisasale said Ipswich had learned to laugh at themselves ever since former Queensland player and now TV personality Paul "Fatty" Vautin made the first "two-head" reference many years ago.
