Matt Campbell moving ahead in Porsche Carrera Cup
WARWICK driver Matt Campbell has finished fourth in race 1 after qualifying second for round 4 of the Porsche Carrera Cup in Townsville.
He is in the cup competition for the first time this year after plenty of wins in other classes last year in his first full season in national racing.
Campbell was sixth in both practice sessions in Townsville and then clocked his fastest lap of one minute, 14.4690 in qualifying second behind David Russell.
He and Russell were less than half a second outside the lap record of 1:14.0389.
In race 1 on Saturday afternoon, Campbell was fourth in a time of 1:15.0734 behind winner Nick Foster, Richard Muscat (second place) and Russell (third). It was his second fourth placing this year, the other was at the Albert Park round.
Campbell was also the fourth fastest on the lap time list. He is 12th in the series after race 1 with 177 points, behind leader Steven Richards on 456.5 points.
Campbell competed in the first three rounds of the series this year but some car troubles which anyone in the sport puts down as "that's motor racing" have cost him the chance of being higher in the standings.
Today in Townsville, he is a chance for his first top-three placing.
He is regarded by many as one of the up-and-coming drivers in Australia.
