Mates hit the highway to big smoke

TRAINER Jim Jarvis has a ringside seat to watch the great mare Winx do her thing at Royal Randwick today but only after he completes his own mission.

Jarvis will start well-bred Evopex, originally a $160,000 yearling purchase, in the TAB Highway Plate over the famous metric mile on the strength of strong-finishing wins with big weights over 1450m and 1600m at Coffs Harbour.

"This gelding has genuine ability, really well-bred by Northern Meteor and an expensive yearling,” he said.

"He's thrived up here (in Coffs Harbour) and his last win was outstanding.

"That's decent form for a Highway.

"He's been dominant his last two wins and he can carry weight as he won with 60kg and we know he can run a strong mile.”

Today, Evopex carries 59kg for regular rider Matthew McGuren and the trainer was never tempted to claim or use a higher profile Sydney jockey.

"No, Matthew has ridden him for both his wins and understands the horse.”

At the Taree Cup meeting tomorrow, Jarvis will start his veteran Plateau Gold, back from a winning campaign in Victoria.

Apprentice Lexi McPherson has recently returned on loan to the stable and her 3kg claim will reduce the weight to a handy 58.5kg in the feature Manning Lightning.
