Arms open wide for music festival

IT looked like it could easily have been a wash out but instead it was a night thousands will never forget.

Coffs Harbour’s third Open Arms Festival went off without a hitch after the rain stopped shortly before the gates opened on Saturday.

The music was loud and constant and there was mud everywhere.

Police said the crowd was generally well behaved but a few festival-goers still managed to get into strife with a handful of people spending the night in lock-up for being drunk and disorderly.

Several others were picked up by officers at the Coffs Harbour Showground and a few more were detained for causing trouble at the after party at the Hoey Moey.

“The festival was relatively incident free despite a few drug and alcohol issues,” a police spokesman said.

He said two youths were cautioned for drug and licensing offences.

A 17-year-old boy was caught using someone else’s licence to try and gain entry to the bar area.

Then at 5pm, officers found a small amount of cannabis on a 16-year-old, who was seen acting suspiciously.

Both youths were cautioned under the Young Offenders Act.

“Another incident happened shortly after 6.30pm, when officers picked up a 41-year-old who had passed out at the venue,” he said.

The man slept off his hangover at the Coffs Harbour Police Station.

He was soon joined in the cells by a few others who had been partying too hard and had too much to drink.
