Martial arts instructor accused of trying to poison Obama

A 41-YEAR-OLD martial arts instructor accused of mailing letters containing the poison ricin to United States President Barack Obama has been arrested by federal authorities.

The New York Times was reporting J. Everett Dutschke, of Tupelo in Mississippi, was taken into custody on Sunday (AEST).

It was the second arrest in two weeks arising from the investigation.

Paul Kevin Curtis, of Corinth, was released after no evidence was found linking him to the letters, which were also sent to a US Senator and a local judge.

Mr Curtis's lawyer claimed in court Mr Dutschke appeared to have framed his client.

The FBI has charged Mr Dutschke with "developing, producing, stockpiling, transferring, acquiring, retaining and possessing a biological agent" for use as a weapon, the NY Times reported.

If convicted, he could face life imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.
