Marlins work hard to stop Thunder rumble
BIG scores were the norm in weekend rugby but the lowest total came in Southern Cross University's 55-10 win over Wauchope.
Marlins struggled at stages to put their visitors away and while they never looked likely to lose, there were lots of hiccups before Thunder stopped rumbling.
The home side scored first and that spurred Wauchope to some of the most enterprising rugby the zone battlers have played all year.
But once they levelled up 5-5, minds began to wander allowing Marlins to pile on the points.
Clearances from the breakdown were much too fast and Wauchope were continually put under pressure.
Coming back from the break, the northern side should have lapped the opposing players.
Unfortunately, there was a lesser share of the Gilbert and a lot more mistakes.
Still, the scoreboard ticked over steadily until Thunder found a second wind late in the afternoon and the joy of the players at scoring the last try was like winning a grand final for them.
At Ian Walton Field, Coffs Snappers were too fast for Kempsey in the highest-scoring match of the weekend.
