Marine park plans suspended: MP

TWEED MP Geoff Provest has announced the NSW Government will suspend all future marine park zones and immediately commission an inquiry into NSW Fisheries policy.

His statement comes after an announcement by the Federal Government last year that identified oceans offshore from the Northern Rivers region as areas for assessment with regards to the creation of no-take marine zones.

“The last thing we need is another marine park,” Mr Provest said.

“We need sufficient scientific research.

“The most important thing we can do is actively engage with our Queensland counterparts.

"A lot of the water off to sea from Southport is technically NSW water.”

In February, the NSW Liberals and Nationals released their fisheries policy – Securing Sustainable, Viable and Healthy Fisheries – aimed at ensuring NSW had a strong and viable commercial fishing industry into the future.

The policy promised to secure $16 million for a restructure of the commercial fishing industry through fishing business exit grants and buyouts, commission an independent review of NSW Fisheries policy, management and administration and create a new joint Recreational and Commercial Fishing Ministerial Advisory Council.

The policy also intended to deliver more jobs in the seafood sector and improve job security.

THE POLICY:

  • Secure $16m for a restructure of the fishing industry.
  • Commission an independent review of NSW Fisheries.
  • Create a new joint Recreational and Commercial Fishing Ministerial Advisory Council.
  • Review on-water cross jurisdictional issues.
