Cycling 3500km for fun

THE way this Coffs Coast couple spend their retirement has been described as 'crazy'.

Wally and Sue Sims, who are 64 and 60 respectively, are about to cycle almost 3500km from Darwin to Carnarvon in Western Australia - just for fun.

“We've always loved riding and we've done 10-day cycling tours before, we thought, 'why not?'” Sue said.

“We get mixed reactions - some people look at us like we're crazy but people who know us aren't surprised,” Wally said.

“It's a beautiful way to see the country. You can feel it, taste it, smell it, all while you see it. It's a very non-threatening way to travel.”

They left on their quest yesterday, driving to Brisbane before flying to Darwin - mountain bikes and trailers in tow - where they will stay with their son until their departure on June 1.

“It's going to take us two months and we'll ride between 70km and 120km a day,” Wally said.

“We've got our trailers we tow behind the bike with all our food, water and camping gear. We'll just set up wherever we feel like it.”
