Family, friends to farewell man who died at mine site

A FUNERAL will be held for mining contractor Ian Hansen who was killed at Glencore's Newlands mine this week.

The 55-year-old UGL contract worker from Mt Pelion, near Calen, is believed to have been killed when a piece of steel fell and struck him on August 30.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday at St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mackay at 1pm.

The family has requested that, rather than flowers, people make contributions to RACQ CQ Rescue.

CFMEU Mackay district president Stephen Smyth said the entire mining community was "very shaken", particularly as Mr Hansen was well-known, having worked at a number of Bowen Basin mines.

"It's very upsetting. While the mining industry is large in distance, it's small in the number of people. He'd worked in a number of other mines," Mr Smyth said last week.

A UGL Ltd spokeswoman extended it's deepest sympathies to the family, friends and work colleagues of Mr Hansen.

"UGL's deepest sympathy goes out to the family, friends and work colleagues... and our thoughts are with them during this very sad time," she said.

UGL was working with all relevant authorities to understand the cause of this tragic incident, she said.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
