A MAN made a miracle escape after being stabbed 27 times and locked in the boot of a car near Uki on Saturday night.

The 62-year-old was travelling in a silver Mazda 626 sedan on Kyogle Rd between Murwillumbah and Uki when he became involved in an altercation with the 41-year-old driver about 11.30pm DST.

The younger man stopped the vehicle and allegedly punched his passenger in the face before stabbing him 27 times with a knife in the upper body.

The victim attempted to flee but was chased down and forced into the boot of the vehicle.

The 62-year-old was able to manipulate the lock on the boot and escape while the vehicle was in motion.

He then made his way to an address on the outskirts of Uki where he raised the alarm.

Tweed Police Inspector Darren Steel said the incident was shrouded in mystery.

“Until we get him (the 41-year-old driver) we won't know what it's all about,” Insp Steel said.

The Banora Point victim was yesterday recovering in the Gold Coast Hospital.

“He is in a serious but stable condition following surgery this (Sunday) morning,” Insp Steel said.

Insp Steel said the 41-year-old man was known to the 62-year-old and had also been residing in the Banora Point area for several months.

Police are searching for a 41-year-old man who may be able to assist with inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 190cm tall, medium build with black short hair and heavily tattooed arms and legs.

At the time of the incident, the 41-year-old was wearing a yellow T-shirt, blue jeans, and black/grey-coloured sunglasses.

He may be driving a 2001 model Mazda 626 sedan.

“If anybody knows of him or his whereabouts they should contact Tweed Heads Police on 07 5536 0999 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” Insp Steel said.
