Man spits in cop's face in disgusting attack

BREAKING: A Southern Downs police officer will undergo months of tests after a man  spat  in his face last night.

Three Warwick police officers were called to a disturbance at a house in Wallace St at 9pm.

Police said the man at the residence was aggressive and non-compliant and allegedly armed himself with a large shard of glass.

Senior Constable Jeremy Lambert said the scene inside the house was too dangerous to attempt an arrest.

"We managed to get him to drop the glass, but he was taunting us to shoot and taser him," he said.

"I eventually managed to talk him outside and that's when he spat in my face and got me in the eye."

The Warwick man was immediately arrested and was charged with three counts of serious assault on a police officer by spitting.

The 33-year-old was also charged later with one count of wilful damage after urinating in his cell.

He remains in custody and faced court this morning where a disease test was ordered.

He will reappear in Warwick Magistrate Court on August 16.

Sergeant Lambert said this was the kind of thing police could encounter on any  day.

"It's part of the job, but it shouldn't be," he said.

Senior Constable Jamie Deacon said this kind of behaviour was completely unacceptable.

"The risk to police here is of the transfer of diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C," he said.

"Every day our police are attending violent situations where they are unsure of what to expect; so there is an unknown level of threat at every job."

This morning Senior Constable Jeremy Lambert received the National Police Service Medal in recognition of at least 15 years of dedicated, professional and diligent service at an awards ceremony in Warwick.
