Van driver seriously injured in highway crash with truck

A MAN has sustained serious injuries but is lucky to be alive after a harrowing collision with a truck north of Maclean.

Police said the 22-year-old driver of a white Volkswagen van was travelling south on the Pacific Highway about 11.40am yesterday when, for reasons unknown, he veered into the opposite lane and into oncoming traffic.

A truck travelling south swerved to miss the oncoming vehicle but the driver's side of the van crashed into its back wheels, trapping the driver by compression.

The truck came to a stop in a ditch about 50m further down the highway.

The driver of the truck, a male in his 50s, was shaken but unhurt.

Speaking at the scene of the crash, about 3km north of the Maclean turnoff, the truck driver said the van driver veered into the wrong lane so quickly it was almost a head-on collision.

Emergency crews worked for about 30 minutes to release the driver of the van, during which time the Pacific Highway was closed in both directions.

The 22-year-old sustained severe but non life-threatening injuries, believed to include a compound fracture to his arm and a severed finger.
