Man seriously injured in attempted highway crossing

A PEDESTRIAN in his 70's has been evacuated to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital after being knocked down while crossing the Pacific Highway south of Coffs Harbour.

Police said the man, aged 73, was hit while crossing the highway from the Koalas Park Villas at Boambee at 9.45am.

They said it appears he was trying to get to a bus stop on the western side of the highway when he was hit by a $WD vehicle using a merging lane.

The man sufferred serious head and internal injuries and was taken to the Coffs Harbour Health Campus but was this afternoon transferred by helicopter to Newcastle.

No charges have been laid.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.
