Man tried to rob teen

A TEENAGER has had a close encounter with a man who tried to rob her in Coffs Harbour.

Police said the 16-year-old had just stepped off a bus on the Pacific Highway near the Red and White Medical Centre and walked to the Bray Street complex at 10am today.

All the while she was being followed by a man who eventually approached her near the former Topolinos building.

The man stood in front of the girl and asked her for money before he tried to reach into her carrybag when she had on her shoulder.

The girl managed to struggle free and she ran away and raised the alarm.

The offender is described as Aboriginal in appearance, aged 30 to 40, with curly brown hair, about 140cm tall, with a medium build, wearing at the time a red shirt, blue jeans and no shoes.

The teenager told police the man had a mark on the left side of his face and possibly a tattoo on the inside of his left wrist.
