Man pleads guilty to murdering wife

A LAWRENCE man, 63, has pleaded guilty to murdering his wife at their family home in November.

Jon Stephen McKenzie appeared in Grafton Local Court yesterday via an audio visual link from Park Lea prison, where he has been in custody since his arrest in early November.

McKenzie’s solicitor Matt Donnelly said while his client was pleading guilty to the murder of his 58-year-old wife Rhonda, there were elements of the police facts he did not agree with.

Mr Donnelly and the Department of Public Prosecutions will meet to come to an agreement on the facts before the case goes to the Supreme Court for a call over on March 9. There, a date will be set for his sentencing.

The murder of Mrs McKenzie occurred in the home on Tullymorgan Road about midnight on November 2.

At the time police said they received a phone call from McKenzie who then called a friend in Lawrence.

Police credited this phone call with allowing the situation to have a ‘peaceful resolution’.

The murder was shocking news to Lawrence residents, who had known the couple for about 15 years.

“We are all shocked,” one said.

“It was totally unexpected that it was those people and in our town.”

Neighbours said they heard nothing on the night of the murder.

The McKenzies have three children, who had all moved away from home.
