UPDATE: A 23-year-old Lismore man, Kaya Ohia, is recovering in Lismore Base Hospital after trying to escape Lismore Court yesterday.
Police said on release from hospital he will be charged with escaping lawful custody.
INITIAL REPORT: A 23-year-old man is in hospital suffering from broken ribs and a fractured vertebrae after he attempted to escape from the Lismore Court House yesterday.
Around 4.20pm the Magistrate informed the man, who was appearing in relation to a number of warrants, that he would be remanded in custody until his next court date.
On hearing this news, police allege the man jumped the dock and ran from the court room while still in handcuffs.
Police said the man was grabbed by a Corrective Services officer but was able to break that hold and continue on.
He then leaped over the hand rail at the top of a stair well falling two to three metres onto a metal hand rail on the ground floor.
The momentum flipped him over and he landed on the stair case, making contact with his left shoulder, police said.
Police, Correctives Services and Sherriff officers have then gained control of the man and given him first aid for his injuries.
He was conveyed, under escort, to Lismore Base Hospital where he was admitted and now remains under watch.
"It was just like the movies but without the stunt doubles," Richmond Local Area Command police wrote on their official Facebook page.
