Man escapes Bellingen house fire

AN elderly man has been treated for smoke inhalation after a house fire today at Bellingen, south-west of Coffs Harbour.

The fire broke out about 10.15am in the sitting room of the house in Waterfall Way.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation but it appears embers from a fireplace ignited carpet and contents.

The flames caused about $100,000 dollars damage.

NSW Fire Brigades crews responded quickly, preventing the destruction of the home.

Police from Bellinger Valley and Coffs Harbour also attended the scene.

The 87-year-old man, who was the occupant of the house, was overcome by smoke and treated at Bellingen Hospital.
