Man drives car at woman who had sex before marriage

A CHRISTIAN fundamentalist drove his vehicle at a woman because he believed she was breaking one of the Ten Commandments by having sex before marriage.

Bradley James Gobracht, 21, knew the victim through the church they attended.

The woman had just left a service she'd attended with her boyfriend and family about 12.20pm on Sunday, April 6, this year, when she saw Gobracht.

He was directly in front of the Victoria St church, leaning against a vehicle and tapping a black handled machete-type knife on the bonnet, prosecutor Michael Ball said.

As the woman was crossing the road with her boyfriend to where her vehicle was parked, Gobracht got into his vehicle, reversed at speed and drove directly at the two.

They were forced to run to the footpath as they saw the vehicle swerve towards them, narrowly missing them before speeding off, Mr Ball said. Gobracht later admitted to police he'd driven the vehicle "directly" at the woman and her boyfriend.

He said his intent was to come within 1 metre of them to scare them, Mr Ball said.

Gobracht admitted if they hadn't run off the road he would have hit them and said his driving was "stupid", the Mackay Magistrates Court was told.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and possessing a knife in a public place.

Gobracht had targeted the woman because of her "promiscuity" in having "sex before marriage", which he believed breached the Ten Commandments, instructing solicitor Peter Clark said.

The Ten Commandments don't specifically state anything about not having sex before marriage.

Gobracht had completed a defensive driving course and was co-operative with police, Mr Clark said.

Magistrate Ross Risson adjourned matters for one week so Gobracht could be assessed for a probation order.
