Man charged with toddler's murder

THE man charged with murder following the death of a toddler in Coffs Harbour earlier this year has been refused bail in court.

Frederick Ernest Williams, 44, of Coffs Harbour did not enter a plea when he appeared briefly for a bail hearing in the Coffs Harbour Local Court today.

Williams stands accused of murdering a two-year-old girl, who was admitted to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital on Wednesday, March 30, suffering severe head injuries.

The girl was airlifted to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, where she died two days later.

Police allege a post mortem examination revealed the toddler suffered significant head trauma, including a fractured skull.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad formed Strike Force Embley in April to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.

As part of their investigation police interviewed the parents and it’s alleged the child was under the care of Williams at the time the injuries were sustained.

He was arrested by police at a Coffs Harbour residence yesterday about 2pm.

Williams was taken to the Coffs Harbour Police Station where he was charged with murder and held overnight prior to the court appearance.

He has been remanded in custody and transported to the Grafton Correctional Centre.

The matter has been adjourned to September 13.
