Runner dies while competing in Coast Run Series event

UPDATE: A 55-year-old man has died while competing in a Sunshine Coast Run Series event in Yaroomba on Sunday morning.

The man collapsed around 8am yesterday morning while competing in the 10km series of the popular event, which was held at Palmer Coolum Resort.

A Queensland Police Media spokesman said officers were called to David Low Way at Yaroomba at 8.30am.

"We were advised of a male potentially having a heart attack or some sort of medical episode," he said.

Queensland Ambulance Service officers assisted those were were already performing CPR on the man, but he was declared deceased shortly after 8.30am.

Event organiser Jason Crowther said it was a tragic and sad outcome.

"Out of respect for the family, I can't go into any more details," he said.

Sunshine Coast Daily motoring editor Grant Edwards ran in the same race and said help was quickly on hand.

"He collapsed close to an aid station and had immediate support from runners and the event first aid officers," he said.

"My family and I were at the finish where there was also a doctor and he was rushed to the scene via a golf cart.

"It was an extremely sad and devastating end to what had been a great family fun day.

"There was an excellent spread of marshals throughout the two laps of the 5km course, along with bike riders out for the lead runners of each distance.

"The conditions were perfect for running. It wasn't too hot, most of the course was in the shade and there were a lot of runners competing over various distances."
