Man charged over cop bashing
A COFFS HARBOUR man, 21, will face court over the assault of a policewoman at Sunday's Group 2 rugby league grand final.
Police arrested the man at the scene and charged him with assault of a police officer in the execution of duties (occasioning actual bodily harm) and affray.
He was conditionally bailed to appear in Coffs Harbour Local Court on September 29.
Police were on patrol at Woolgoolga Sportsground when a fight broke out between spectators on the western side of the ground about 4.15pm.
The first grade clash between the Woolgoolga Seahorses and the Orara Valley Axemen had just gone into extra-time.
A police spokesman said officers immediately moved in to break up the brawl involving about 10 people.
“During the incident, a female senior constable dropped a portable radio,” the spokesman said.
“Police will allege that while in the process of picking the radio back up off the ground, the senior constable was kicked to the head.”
A short time later, she collapsed and lost consciousnesses.
She was taken to Coffs Harbour Health Campus as a precautionary measure, and for observation, and was later released.
Chief Inspector Shane Cribb said violence towards the police would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
“Those responsible can be assured that appropriate action will be taken,” Mr Cribb said.
“I wish to acknowledge and praise the officers involved in the incident for their swift action in defusing a volatile situation quickly.”
