Man, 26, tasered

POLICE were forced to discharge a taser gun to subdue a mental health patient in Coffs Harbour.

Officers were called to the Coffs Harbour Health Campus mental health unit at 4pm on Monday when a 26-year-old man became extremely violent and threatening, police said.

Security guards locked the man in an outdoor courtyard and secured the area, police said.

Police arrived at the scene to discover the man had smashed a large perspex window in his attempt to force it open.

They discharged a taser to subdue the man and hospital staff helped to restrain him once it was safe to do so.

He was sedated and placed in a room, police said.

Police said the man had been previously charged with violence offences and was on bail at the time to seek medical help.
