Mama embracing the power of music

MAKING music has always been a part of Danielle Caruana, aka Mama Kin, but it wasn't until she recognised how important it was for her well-being that she finally burst forth from her chrysalis.

The youngest of six children born to Maltese parents, she grew up surrounded by many musical influences but kept her own passion a private pursuit.

Her mother's illness and the birth of her own children changed all that.

She realised if she wanted her children to grow up with a sense of freedom and being brave, she had to do it herself.

"I realised I was telling my kids to be brave but hiding my own physical and emotional expression of my art form," Mama Kin said.

"I recognised that music was part of my language base and life force - I had to learn to be brave and express it myself."

The result is a captivating mix of sweet soul and gutsy blues presented with sass and appeal and plenty downright foot-stomping fun.

"We have a lot of fun when we are on stage and never take our audiences for granted. The songs are the medium and I believe performing is all about communicating and connecting with people."

Her songs draw deeply from experiences of heartbreak and good times and are delivered in a unique swampy New Orleans style.

"I write songs about things that move me - or make me move," she said.

"Music is both a physical and emotional experience and can happen in so many ways.

"I explore a wide range of lyrics but am also attracted to the deep groove of songs by the likes of Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles."

Mama Kin is joined on stage by her brother, Michael, on keyboards and percussion and George Servants on drums.

It's a small outfit that fills the stage with plenty of sound.

Mama Kin will be performing at the Bellingen Global Carnival on the October long-weekend, Friday, September 30, to Sunday, October 2, with performances on Friday night and Saturday.
