Man charged for vicious torch bashing on New Year's

A MAN will appear in Coffs Harbour Local Court today over an alleged malicious wounding offence during New Year's celebrations.

About 8pm on Wednesday, a 29-year-old man was with his partner and children at the Coffs Harbour Jetty when he returned to his car parked nearby.

Police have been told at this time, a man approached him and spoke to him briefly.

The man, aged 43, then allegedly struck the 29-year-old with an aluminium torch, causing a cut to his head and several teeth chipped.

A struggle ensued between the pair, before witnesses intervened.

The older man left the scene and police were notified of the incident.

Following inquiries, the older man was arrested at taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station where he was charged with malicious wounding and breaching an apprehended violence order. He was also refused bail.

It's believed the men were known to each other.
