THE tenacity and contribution of community radio station CHYFM has been lauded with the presentation of a Premier's Award.

Station manager Becky Cole said the station had given opportunities to hundreds of young Coffs Coasters over the years with many going on to careers in broadcasting and media.

Coffs Harbour MP Andrew Fraser presented the award on behalf of Premier Mike Baird and praised the ability of the station to survive in difficult times.

"CHY has been around for a long while - many have tried to kill them, the economy included," he said.

"Every kid in the area has had an opportunity to be part of 104.1FM."

Ms Cole said since starting in 1973 the station had worked to give young people an outlet where they could be proud to contribute.

"It's an absolute surprise and we're delighted to receive this award," she said.

"We've been doing a lot of work over 40 years with young people and young musicians."

The station gives volunteers the chance to present a show and for local musicians to have their songs uploaded into the station's catalogue.
