Major update in Harrup Park funds battle

TALKS are progressing between Harrup Park Country Club and the State Government over the Great Barrier Reef Arena project with Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert confirming a date has been set for a meeting to discuss grant funding for the project.

It comes after Shadow Sport Minister John-Paul Langbroek queried funding for the project during Estimates in Queensland Parliament this week.

The meeting has been scheduled for August 13 between Mrs Gilbert, representatives from Mackay Regional Council and representatives from HPCC.

The Great Barrier Reef Arena project has been designed and costed to bring Harrup Park up to international standard and attract major sporting events to the region.

While the Federal Government has committed $10 million, Harrup Park has been unable to secure the matched funding required from the State Government.

Mrs Gilbert said it was important to match up projects that met the criteria for funding grants.

"We have to make sure it ticks all the boxes because it's public money and we need to make sure there's transparency,” she said.

HPCC general manager Matt Cielens said he would be seeking assistance from the State Government during the meeting to see the project progressed.

"We're positive that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and hope to work together cooperatively with the state and local government to improve the region's assets,” he said.

The arena is one of four projects being advocated for as part of the next stage of the Daily Mercury's Our Future Mackay campaign.
