Maher, Smith help Scorchers strike back

CRICKET: The Sunshine Coast rebounded from their outright loss to Valley a week ago with a convincing display against Wests at Buderim during the weekend.

The match, which was reduced from two days to a one-day clash after rain spoilt proceedings on Saturday, was dominated by the Scorchers.

The hosts compiled 7/248 off 50 overs, largely due to another strong knock from captain Alecz Day (69), while relative newcomer Josh Matthews continued to impress with 27 runs from 26 balls.

But it was the team's opening bowlers who did the real damage, startling Wests with a 4/8 spell within the first few overs.

Blake Maher (3/21) and Rory Smith (1/26) essentially sealed the deal, before the visitors were eventually dismissed for just 126 off 37 overs.

"That was very important. They got the line and length absolutely correct,” Day said.

"They put the ball in good areas and they (Wests) nicked them. It doesn't always go your way but the boys got it right and that really set up the game for us.

"We kind of knew it (the win) was in the bag 10 overs into the bowling innings.

"Rory has got first class experience (Glamorgan) and Blake is one of those guys who has a lot of promise. He's 23 and has all the makings of a really good fast bowler.”

The Scorchers went into the state premier grade clash ninth on a 12-team two-day ladder but should be elevated.

"It was a good way for them to bounce back from last game's disappointment,” Day said.
