Magner finally claims the prize

A MASSIVE field of 228 lady golfers contested the 13th annual 36-hole QantasLink Ladies Amateur Golf Classic at Bonville Golf Resort on the weekend.

The event has become a major fixture on the ladies amateur golf calendar with entries from far North Queensland as far west as Alice Springs and as far south as Victoria.

This year's field was the biggest that the event has attracted since its inception back in 1997 and saw the ladies vying for more than $8000 worth of prizes.

All while have having fun playing golf of course.

Most of the entrants were returning from previous years to tackle the challenging Bonville layout and experience one of the few women-only two-day events in Australia.

The Division 1 winner for the event and overall champion was event veteran Rhonda Magner from Concord Golf Club, showing great ability to bounce back overnight after trailing by six shots after the opening day.

Magner has been coming to the event year after year and has finished second a staggering six times and has always been in the hunt.

With a gross score for the weekend of 169, Rhonda avoided a playoff defeating Val Marsh of Ocean Shores by one stroke and local Kristy Hickey of Coffs Harbour who finished with a 172 for the weekend.

The winner was ecstatic to have finally been able to hold the trophy above her head after being the runner-up so many times before. Rhonda now has 12 months to plan her attack on the Bonville layout and go for back-to-back wins at the 14th QantasLink Ladies Classic in 2010.

The Junior Title went to talented youngster Kristen Farmer from Charleston who was in the lead group for Sunday after an impressive 84 on day one.

Kristen's name is now on the trophy and like Rhonda Magner is keen to make it a back-to-back win in 2010 and possibly the overall title as well considering juniors have a great track record in pulling off the double title at the QantasLink Ladies Classic in the event's 13 year history.

The Division 1 nett winner was Claudette Martin from Ocean Shores with 146 defeating local Kristy Hickey from Coffs Harbour with 152.

Division 2 gross winner was Esther Carroll from Concord with 182 on a countback from Bonville's Janette Curran. The nett winners in Division 2 were Jenifer West from Bonville with 147 and Gillian Virgine of Strathfield with 149.

Division 3 Stableford winner was Joe Schuhmann of Coffs Harbour with 71 points over the weekend. Runner-up was Gaye Johnson of Armidale with 66 points, third placed was Marie O'Loughlin of Concord with 62 points and fourth placed was Kate Judd of Coffs Harbour with 61 points.

Division 4 Stableford winner was Gerri Foster of Monash Golf Club with 59 points from runner-up Jeanette Hughes of Port Macquarie with 58 points, third placed was Anne Crane of Bonville with 53 points and fourth placed was Yvonne Kerkin of Everglades with 53 points on a countback.
