Mad hatters' tea party

NORTH Coast residents are being encouraged to "think outside the box" when raising money for Australia's Biggest Morning Tea Cancer Council fundraiser this year.

Anyone can register to host a fundraiser online at biggestmorningtea.com.au.

Traditionally, people attending the fundraisers buy a cup of tea and the proceeds go to the Cancer Council to be used for cancer research.

Cancer Council Far North Coast will officially launch the region's fundraisers, which will continue throughout May, at Circus Arts in Byron Bay today, where a circus performer will drink "high tea" on a trapeze.

Cancer Council Far North Coast community relations co-ordinator Kellie Pinkerton encouraged people to get creative this year.

"They can raise money however they want," she said. "Some people have raffles and barbeques but we love crazy ideas, so anyone who wants to come on board with one is more than welcome. The crazier the better."

The Hilltop Tavern in Goonellabah has decided to hold a "hatters party" where attendees wear eccentric hats.

Cancer Council Far North Coast hopes to bring in $150,000 with this year's fundraiser.
