Mackay's plan to revolutionise mining industry

INNOVATIVE minds are being encouraged to develop their ideas at an exciting new accelerator program being held in Mackay.

MACKHACK is a fast-paced weekend event, helping local start-ups or scale-ups who have an innovative idea that could be introduced to the mining sector.

The event will provide local innovators with the chance to tackle some of the big challenges facing the mining industry and will give them access to industry mentors and other like-minded individuals.

Split Spaces community manager Deb Allan said the MACKHACK program will be intensive.

"It's a really exciting way to come together with like minded people and talk and innovate and develop ideas,” she said.

"We would like to make MACKHACK an annual event going forwards.

"Mackay really is Australia's innovation hub so I think an event like this is important because mining companies are going to benefit from new ideas.”

Mackay mayor Greg Williamson met with Ms Allan at Split Spaces today to discuss the event, which is funded by the council, the Queensland Government and METS Ignited.

He said Mackay's METS sector was already well established.

"We have more patents in our METS sector than any other region in Australia, so we are innovators,” he said.

"What we need to do is enthuse our young minds, university students and people with ideas about the future.

"MACKHACK is a program that will take innovative ideas and give them some legs, there are no stupid ideas.”

Cr Williamson said it was important to encourage ideas that would deliver the jobs of the future.

The MACKHACK Accelerator program will be delivered on June 7 to 9. To be eligible, applicants should live and work in the Mackay/Bowen Basin region and be available to participate in the entire program over the weekend.

Participants will pitch their ideas and then work in teams to develop the ideas before the final showcase on Sunday. Representatives from local mining and major METS companies will be on hand to provide mentorship throughout the event. Winners will take home a share of the $5000 prize pool.
