Mackay water polo players making a splash

WATER POLO: Mackay made up about half of the Queensland Men's team that competed at the Country Championships in Hobart.

"We had the highest representation out of any club in Queensland, apart from one of the women's teams,” Mackay coach Matt Brady said.

There were also two Mackay players in the Queensland Country Women's team which won silver while the men's team came away with bronze.

Brady said there was a wealth of talented water polo players in the region, as demonstrated at the recent state titles Mackay hosted in February.

"We had ex-National League and Australian players here who have gone away and shown they can still play and come home with the goods,” he said.

Mackay's John Campbell and Matthew Wilson both played for the Brisbane Barracudas and Queensland Breakers.

"I had a feeling the Queensland men's team would do really well,” Brady said. "They had a really good team on paper.”

Brady played in the Australian Defence Force team, which lost to Queensland by just one point. "We didn't do as well as we should have, we had a good starting team but just not much depth in the subs,” he said. "The competition was really tough and close, the teams were all pretty evenly matched across the men's competition.”

From the championships player could nominate for the Australian team to compete in Thailand at the end of the year. Brady is expecting to see some Mackay names on the list when the squad is announced next month.

Next year Townsville will host the Water Polo State Titles and Rockhampton the Country Championship.

"Going forward, it's going to be great for the club, having such high quality competitions so close to home,” Brady said.
