Mackay tradies needed for school upgrade project

THE Queensland Government is calling for tradies to work on extensive classroom refurbishments at Mackay West State School.

Tenders are now up for grabs.

Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert said five classrooms at the school will soon have new walls, cabinets and carpet installed.

"This is not just about providing important school facilities to make sure our kids get the best education possible, I also believe that trade work in our local schools should go to local contractors wherever possible,” she said.

"So I would really encourage eligible businesses in Mackay to get a tender in. This is great for our local tradies and their families.”

Work at Mackay West State School will go ahead thanks to the $200 million Advancing Queensland State Schools Program.

It's expected more school upgrades will soon be announced in the Mackay region.

In the latest Mackay West State School newsletter principal Rae Lee Cox said the junior campus Y-Block refirubishment will accommodate five innovative new early years learning rooms.

"This work is an exciting upcoming project for our school. It is anticipated the work will commence this year,” she wrote.

Ms Lee Cox informed the school community more information would be provided about the upgrade in coming newsletters.
