Mackay shows love to animals in need
ANIMALS in need are enjoying new beds, crates, food and toys thanks to community funding.
The Mackay Animal Rescue Society has been preented with $3000 after winning Telstra's Connected Communities campaign.
Three Mackay region community groups were in the running for the top prize, with residents voting for their favoured group. The groups were chosen based on their role as grassroots community organisations, of benefit to the area.
MARS received the most votes, but Mackay Community Foundation and the Road Accident Action Group also had a share in the prize money.
MARS president Peta Kelly said the funding was vital to keep the group running.
"We are all volunteers and we are a not-for-profit organisation, so every bit of money counts,” she said.
"We have significant vet bills and we can only pay for them with the money we raise through fundraising and donations.
"A boost like this is a massive help.”
Ms Kelly said it was nice to see Mackay showing its support for MARS.
"We received the most votes, and I think that goes to show there are a lot of animal lovers in the region,” she said.
MARS volunteer cat carer Steph McCann is one of those animal lovers.
Ms McCann has a passion for animals and would love to be a vet one day, but for now, caring for rescue animals is the next best thing.
"I've been a volunteer for the past four years because I really love animals,” she said.
"I'd also really like to become a vet, but I've found being a carer allows me to help the animals that don't have anyone else to care for them.
"It's a great feeling knowing I am giving them a chance at life.”
Ms McCann takes care of surrendered cats full-time, bottle feeding the kittens every hour.
She said the responsibility had been a great lesson for her young daughter.
"My daughter Bella helps me clean and care for the animals.
"It actually feels strange when we don't have any cats in the house because they become part of the family,” she said.
MARS will hold a kitten adoption day on Sunday, April 14 at Chemist Warehouse on Evans Avenue, North Mackay.
