Mackay rider cross country champion
MACKAY mountain biker Peter Lister won his first green and gold jersey at the National XCO Championships at the weekend.
Lister, who is two times national series champion, had targeted the national championship in Armidale this year and his hard work had paid off.
"I've wanted this for a number of years," he said.
"The first year I was ninth and then fourth."
He said the championship in Armidale had been a target for the past four months and included a large training block over the Christmas period.
"The last four weeks has been short interval, high intensity training," he said.
He also spent some time on the course earlier in the year in preparation for the championships.
"I think the course suited my style of riding," he said.
"The (climbs) weren't really steep for a long time. There was a lot of time between corners and I was able to put the power on in the technical sections."
In the end Lister won the division by 23 seconds over his nearest rival. It was a significant gap for the four lap race, but if he committed even a small error he would have been punished.
"My fastest lap was the last one," he said. "Every one of my laps had negative splits."
He said there was very little time difference between his first and last lap of the racing on Sunday.
Lister started and finished in the lead setting the pace for the rest of the field.
Now his attention has turned to the National XO Series where he is placed second with two rounds to go. "I can't remember anyone winning the championship and the series in the same year," he said.
The next round of the series is in Canberra in three weeks, and for Lister it was all about peaking at the right time.
When asked if the green and gold jersey would be donned at his home track at Rowallan Park, he said: "I think this one is straight to the pool room". While Lister was competing in the Masters III class, there were two riders from Mackay in the under 17 competition.
MAD Mountain Bike members Kiah Dumigan and Alex Bogna went with Lister to Armidale.
Dumigan broke a chain during the elimination on Friday, and finished 21st in the XCO.
Bogna finished in 24th place.
