Mackay emergency services go south to help Rocky and Yeppoon
MACKAY district emergency services have headed south to assist with the clean up after ex-Tropical Cyclone ripped through Yeppoon and Rockhampton.
Mackay Police District Duty Office Senior Sergeant Mark Sweetnam said a contingent of officers left Mackay yesterday and arrived in Rockhampton last night.
They will continue on to Yeppoon today to assist with the clean-up and general policing, Snr Sgt Sweetnam said.
RACQ-CQ Rescue left for Rockhampton at 8am today with two crews from the Mackay Base to assist with the relief effort.
Thousands of people have been left without power, while others have been left isolated by flood waters on remote properties.
RACQ-CQ Rescue chief executive officer Martin Cleland said the organisation would do whatever it could to assist the Capricorn Coast community.
The crews are unsure of what to expect due to the widespread power failure in the region.
Rescue crewman Dave Williams said, "We're as prepared as we can be to help out and we just want to get down there. It's why we're here."
