Mackay Cutters announce new head coach

THE MACKAY Cutters have their new head coach.

The club today announced Michael Crawley would be the man to lead the Cutters into the 2020 Intrust Super Cup season.

He replaced former coach Steve Sheppard, who led the Cutters for three seasons from 2017-19.

Crawley comes to the Cutters from the St George Illawara Dragons, where he was the club’s coaching adviser for the 2019 NRL season.

Before his one-year stint at the Dragons, Crawley spent 12 seasons as an NRL assistant coach at the Canberra Raiders (2007-8), North Queensland Cowboys (2009-11), Newcastle Knights (2012-14) and again at the Raiders (2015-18).

During his 35 years coaching rugby league, Crawley has worked alongside such veteran mentors as Wayne Bennett, Ricky Stuart and Graham Murray.

Despite his long-running rein as an NRL assistant, Crawley is no stranger to second-tier rugby league.

In 2014, he coached the Newcastle Knights’ Under-20s to the minor premiership and was named as coach in the Holden Cup Team of the Season.

Mackay Cutters CEO Maurie Fatnowna said Crawley would bring a wealth of coaching knowledge to the club and his proven history of developing young players was a massive drawcard.

“We want to develop our local talent and he’s done it in the past with the National Youth Competition and the U20s systems at NRL clubs, so he understands the importance of developing youth,” Fatnowna said.

“The real quality that Michael brings is he’s experienced different coaching styles from different systems. He will come to us with new ideas and a new voice.”

Fatnowna said Crawley would be “onsite” at BB Print Stadium by October 23 ahead of the start of pre-season on November 11.
