Lockwood returns to Macleay Valley
VB GOLD Group 2 coaching appointments for the upcoming season are now complete.
Macleay Valley’s selection of former player Willie Lockwood as captain-coach to replace Adam McMurray was the last of nine off-season confirmations.
McMurray had originally planned to continue in the role, but surgery on a nagging shoulder injury will keep him off the field until May, so he decided to step aside.
Despite his superb talents as a player and strategist, Lockwood has often courted controversy and his most recent engagement in charge of Wingham Tigers (Group 3) was marred by a spat with a rival captain-coach following accusations of racial vilification.
Meanwhile, Sawtell co-coach Ryan Prevett’s immediate playing future remains in limbo.
Rumours have swept league circles in recent days the joint winner of the Group’s 2010 player of the year award was ready to call it quits, with his body demanding a well-earned break.
If so, it will rob the competition of one of the most talented and polished players to ply his trade in recent decades.
Coaching partner Rohan Loudon, himself on the comeback trail from shoulder surgery, confirmed the stories were only partly true.
“You could say he’s undecided about playing again ... but he definitely hasn’t made his mind up for sure,” he said.
