Local war hero tells story

AUSTRALIA’S latest Victoria Cross winner, Dorrigo-born Trooper Mark Donaldson, has presented the original citation for his VC to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

That citation officially details the acts of heroism performed in Afghanistan in 2008, for which he received the VC, the first to an Australian in almost 40 years.

In a brief ceremony at the war memorial on Friday, he presented the citation to war memorial assistant director Nola Anderson.

The memorial already has his VC on long-term loan, on display in the gallery displaying artefacts from Australia’s involvement in Afghanistan.

Trooper Donaldson, a member of the Special Air service Regiment, said the citation would allow the memorial to tie his story together.

“Hopefully (it will) bring the Hall of Valour into the present and make sure that it is all one piece and it all comes together,” he said.
