Local carrying cannabis charged

A COFFS Harbour man let it slip he had cannabis in his pocket when police asked him if he was carrying drugs outside a local hotel.

As officers attempted to search him, Robert Patrick Coates, 45, reached into his pocket and pulled out a plastic container, which flew open scattering several bags of cannabis on the ground.

Police had earlier been called to the hotel on June 6 at 1pm following reports Coates was running in front of traffic on the Pacific Highway in the city centre.

As officers approached he walked outside carrying a schooner of beer.

With five sandwich bags of the drug scattered on the ground, Coates is said to have kicked his beer causing the glass to break near a police vehicle.

To prevent any further violence, police restrained him.

He was charged with carrying a prohibited drug.

Found guilty of the offence in court this week he was fined $1500.
