LNP cancer plan a 'backward step'

QUEENSLAND Health Minister Lawrence Springborg has moved to hose down concerns over the State Government's restructure of Breastscreen Queensland.

The Government has announced plans to decentralise the service, giving the responsibility for mobile breast-screening vans and relief radiographers to individual hospitals and health boards.

Queensland Cancer Council chief executive Jeff Dunn says he has some concerns about the plans.

"It's tinkering with what is a key service," he said.

"We do believe that has to be done very carefully. It requires consideration, it has to look at all possible and potential outcomes and what we can't do is compromise what is a life-saving service."
