Lismore Hospital bomb scare

STAFF and patients at Lismore Base Hospital's cancer and psychiatric units had to be evacuated yesterday morning after the hospital received a call about what police have described as an “object” in one of the buildings.

Cancer patients in dressing gowns and wheelchairs, some wearing oxygen masks, along with clients of the new Richmond Clinic, were sent out of their respective buildings about 9am yesterday while police and some staff searched them, eventually coming up empty-handed.

Richmond Local Area Command duty officer, Inspector Bill McKenna, described the incident as “minor”, saying patients and staff were briefly evacuated “as a precautionary measure”.

Insp McKenna declined to comment on the nature of the “object” officers and staff were searching for.
