Lions Club delivers hearty life-saving donation

OPEN-HEART surgery served as inspiration for the Mackay Northern Beaches Lions Club’s donation of defibrillators to four schools and a police station.

Outgoing secretary Doug Petersen said his two heart operations, which gave him a mechanical aorta valve, had gotten him interested in “all things heart”.

At a cost of almost $2500 each, the club gifted a defibrillator to Mackay Northern Beaches State High School, Eimeo Road State School, Bucasia State School, St Brendan’s Catholic Primary School and the Northern Beaches Police Station.

“We wanted to demonstrate to the community how involved we are,” Mr Petersen said.

“People in our community supported this project every time they bought a sausage at Bunnings, gave cans to our Lions container exchange project, bought a Lions cake, or bought a ticket in the meat tray raffle at Blacks Beach Tavern.”

Eimeo Road State School deputy principal Cameron Brown said the defibrillator would help make sure all of their students and staff were safe in emergency situations.

The smart-tech defibrillator give voice instructions to the user including coaching how to give consistent CPR compressions.
