Lifesavers get top honours during region's branch awards
SURF LIFESAVING: The loyalty of Alexandra Headland athletes Alyssa Bull and Lani Pallister has been lauded after they claimed top honours in the region's lifesaving awards.
Bull was named athlete of the year while Pallister won the youth athlete of the year prize during the Surf Life Saving Sunshine Coast Awards of Excellence on Saturday.
Their accolades came on the back of stellar efforts on both the national and world stages.
Bull earned a maiden single ski title at the lifesaving worlds late last year and was part of four gold medal performances on the ski during the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Pallister amassed 13 gold medals, both individual and team, during worlds before snaring 11 medals at Aussies.
Sunshine Coast branch team manager and state selector Craig Law praised the pair for their commitment to Alex while also chasing their Olympic dreams.
"Both of them have been kids who have come through the nipper programs from eight years of age at Alexandra Headland there,” Law said.
"They're swimming and kayaking for Australia but they're also still heavily engaged with their club.
"They haven't forgotten where they came from and I think that's really important that the loyalty they've shown to their club who have shown such support for them over the years.”
It was a big night for the club, with Jack Hansen awarded coach of the year while their open patrol outfit was named sports team of the year.
Maroochydore's Jamie Perkins received junior athlete of the year.
Law himself was an award recipient after being presented with the volunteer of the year award and the Clive Hammond OAM Silver Medal accolades.
"It was a bit of a shock,” he said.
"I've really been one to seek out awards or acknowledgement.”
"(But) It was a nice touch to be recognised from the branch and people involved.”
Law joined Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving Club in 2004 and is the current president.
